Skincare Questions:
1. What is the best advice for our readers to follow this summer with regards to their skin and skincare routine?
The evidence is undisputable that excessive exposure to sunlight is damaging to skin. Therefore the best advice is to limit your exposure to the harmful rays of the sun and use a great sunscreen if exposure is planned. Skin care is important, particularly hydrating the skin, to maintain a youthful look and to limit damage which leads to aging. The skin is a barrier that provides protection. Not only does it provide an external shield from bacteria, and pollutants etc, it also is a barrier to keep water within our skin. It is important to maintain this barrier function by not allowing damage to the important lipid component between our skin cells and prevent dehydration.
2. What steps should our readers follow to keeping their skin fresh and healthy this summer?
Live a "shady life" by staying out of the sun and if necessary using the proper sunscreens when outside.
3. If completely avoiding the sun is not an option... what steps should our readers take to keep themselves safe this summer?
First and foremost is using an effective sunscreen that is stable under the sun and does not break down. You have to be sure to reapply frequently to maintain coverage. Always keep a great moisturizer handy with plenty of antioxidants to replenish and help cellular repair. Use protective covering such as great hats with a flair, baseball caps with your favorite logo, cool cotton head scarf's (Hermes, Valentino etc.). Wear clothes that breathe and let the air circulate such as cotton and linens. Avoid Polyesters and silks as they don't breathe as well. Drink lots of water!
4. Are their any new mass products on the market that are interesting for summer skincare? Why?
Yes... it is coming at the end of summer!!! Hold onto your hats!
5. What ingredients should our readers look for when purchasing a sunscreen?
It is very important to look for a sunscreen that covers both UVA and UVB. Most do not! Many sunscreens are actually broken down by sunlight and are no longer effective after several hours! There are several new, next generation technologies (Helioplex and Mexoryl) that are effective in stabilizing sunscreens in the sunlight and lead to much better UVA protection. Look for these!
6. What is a good skincare regimen to follow during the summer months?
I believe the one of the most important parts of the regimen should be a great moisturizer. Keeping your skin moisturized will maintain and preserve the "lipid" layer structure between the cells which is necessary both for function of the protective barrier as well as allowing proper skin cell regeneration. Buy products with antioxidants such as Vitamin C, and E and find a concentration of Vitamin A which suits your skin and particular needs. Incorporating products with valuable select peptides can "wake up" your collagen producing cells to help provide more youthful looking skin. A consult with your physician is often integral to finding the right products to use for your unique needs.
7. Do you have any tips for summer that you share with your patients?
I think I have covered them, but I always recommend spending time with your family, travel, take time off to enjoy your life, and try to limit exposure those in your life that provide any negative influences.
8. Do you have any tips on getting a healthy glow without using the sun?
Maintaining a great diet and exercise regimen is very important in providing a healthy lifestyle. Don't underestimate how important this is for your skin, and as always, try to be happy! I think happy people have a healthy glow...! Oddly enough, "Sunset Tan" provides a very nice self tanner which is safe, effective, and natural!
